How a hardcover cover differs from a paperback
A paperback cover is trimmed to size, so it only needs 0.125 in of bleed. A hardcover cover is glued around rigid boards, and the extra paper folds inside the case. That's why the file needs 0.591 in of wrap on every edge instead of bleed, and why the boards are slightly larger than your pages.
The hinge (blue dashed lines in the preview) is where the cover bends when the book opens. Text placed there can crease or disappear, so the safe zones (green) start after it.

How big is a KDP hardcover cover?
Bigger than the paperback. The cover wraps boards that are 0.197 in wider and 0.236 in taller than the trim, plus 0.591 in of wrap on every edge. A 6 × 9 in hardcover with 300 white pages needs a 14.439 × 10.417 in cover (4332 × 3126 px at 300 DPI).
How is KDP hardcover spine width calculated?
Page count × paper thickness, plus about 0.189 in (4.8 mm) for the case. Paper thickness is 0.002252 in per page for white paper and standard color, 0.0025 in for cream and 0.002347 in for premium color.
What trim sizes and page counts does KDP hardcover support?
Case-laminate hardcovers come in 5.5 × 8.5, 6 × 9, 6.14 × 9.21, 7 × 10 and 8.25 × 11 in, with 76 to 550 pages.
What is the hinge?
The hinge is the 0.394 in (10 mm) groove on each side of the spine where the cover bends. Keep text and important art out of it, and at least 0.125 in inside the board edges.
